Bight Newspaper reports that young couples have been admonished to build their marital unions on sacrifice, prayer and love for each other as they embark on the lifelong journey of marriage.
They have also been advised to be the best counsellor for each other to surmount various challenges that would come their way as couples.
The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, gave the advice at the wedding reception of former Miss Kemelayefa Dein, and her heartthrob, Mr Alex Ogba, in Yenagoa at the weekend.
Kemelayefa is the daughter of Hon. Dein Benadoumene, who is the Chairman of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission.
Speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the event, Senator Ewhrudjakpo, said the only way young married people could safeguard their relationships was to be conscious of the fact that marriage is about sacrifice, sustained by prayer and mutual love for each other.
He noted that in any relationship where one or both partners claim to know everything, there is bound to be strife and misgivings which could lead to crisis in the home and eventual collapse of the marriage.
Counseling the husband, the Deputy Governor pointed out that the role of the man is to honour, understand, nurture and support his wife in every feasible way for her to succeed in her responsibilities in the home.
According to him, the wife has the responsibility to win her husband to herself by being faithful, respectful, and to inform him about everything she sets to do in the home.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo further counseled them against allowing overbearing third party influence which could jeopardize peace in their home, and urged them to avoid abusing one another and sanctimonious attitude towards each other.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Francis Ikio, described marriage as one of the oldest social institutions established by God to guarantee the continuity of the human race.
Chief Ikio, who advised the couple to apply the biblical Golden Rule in their marital union, said they should guard against interference to achieve and enjoy stability, peace and progress in their marriage.
The Chairman, Bayelsa Elders Council and immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (Rtd); the Secretary to State Government, Alabo Gideon Ekeuwei, Head of Service, Dame Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, honourable commissioners of the state executive council, among other dignitaries, attended the reception.
