
YENAGOA-Bight Newspaper reports that the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship is set to hold its fourth edition from August 23-25, 2024, at the Chief Dappa Biriye Conference Centre, Golden Tulip Hotel, Onopa, Yenagoa.
The three-day tournament, organized by the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association (BYSA), will feature five categories: masters, intermediate, veterans, opens, and secondary school students based in Bayelsa State, with special prizes for female players.
The total prize money for this edition is N6.5 million, with the masters category winner taking home N750,000 and a trophy which is an increase from the previous three editions’ prize money of N500,000.
BYSA Chairman, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the new dates after consulting with the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) and assured a hitch-free tournament.

He praised Governor Diri’s commitment to sports development, which has made Bayelsa a sporting hub in the South-South region.
“The Governor Diri Scrabble Classic has become the biggest tournament on the NSF calendar and attracts our country’s top players who are dominating the local, African, and international circuit,” Alabrah said.
“This season four promises to be bigger as the prize money has been raised to N6.5 million for the top four categories.” He added
He commended Governor Diri’s passion for all-round sports development, which has seen Bayelsa become a sporting hub in the South-South and indeed the whole country. “The governor continues to encourage and develop other sports apart from football, and the state reaps the benefits in its outstanding performance at major national competitions.”
According to Mr. Alabrah registration details and other information will be shared through the NSF and scrabble platforms on social media as interested players are encouraged to register and participate in the tournament.
The Governor Diri National Scrabble Championship has become a premier event in the scrabble calendar, attracting top players from across the country. This edition promises to be exciting, with increased prize money and a strong field of competitors.
