The sponsor of the controversial Social Media Bill, Sen Sani Musa has disclosed that fake news against the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari was what spurred him to sponsor the bill which recently scaled second reading in the Senate.

Defending the Social Media bill on Channels Television, the Senator said the bill is aimed at curbing fake news being peddled on social media. He added that the bill when passed will unite Nigerians.

“There is never a time where the unity of this country has been shaking like this time. Why is that? Part of it, is the use of the Social media.

“I give you one simple example. And I will use the President of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari as example. You are very much aware of what trended in the social media, that President Buhari is taking a second wife.

“Almost everyone knows that is not true” Sen. Musa stressed, adding that on social media the rumor was painted to be true.
