Zamfara: INEC Holds Emergency Meeting Over Supreme Court Ruling

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has held an emergency meeting, following the Supreme Court’s Judgement delivered today 24th May 2019 on the Governorship, National and State Assembly Elections held in Zamfara State, to consider the Court’s decision.
A press statement signed by the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye, on Friday 24th May 2019, stated that, the Commission having met today, will meet again tomorrow Saturday 25th May 2019, to deliberate on issues arising from the supreme Court judgement.
The statement added that the Commission will communicate its final decision on the court ruling to the public on Monday 27th May 2019.
Bight News had reported that Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday 24th May 2019, sacked the incumbent Governor and all lawmakers of Zamfara State, of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in favor of candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP).
The Supreme Court judgement as contained in the INEC release, “ruled that the All Progressive Congress (APC) did not hold valid party primaries as required by the law.
“It held that all the votes scared by the APC in the said Elections are wasted votes and declared that the candidates of the political parties with the second highest valid votes and the requisite spread should be declared as having been elected”.
