…Laments over the low-key marking of Workers Day, lauds Health workers.
The Bayelsa State Governor, Sen. Douye Diri has reiterated the commitment of his led administration to prioritize the welfare of workers and pensioners in the state.
The governor who on Friday took to his social media page, noted that his administration has kept to its campaign promises by clearing outstanding debts owed to workers and retirees, up to date timely payment of salaries to workers and retirees, full implementation of the 30% minimum wage, payment of outstanding gratuities to pensioners.
“During our campaigns last year, we assured workers in Bayelsa that we will be committed to their welfare and working with their various stakeholders and unions, we will regularly interface in order for us all to be on the same page.
“Today, we can beat our chest to say that we have honourably kept to some of our promises and we are committed to do more. We are regularly paying salaries and pensions, clearing outstanding gratuities and other financial obligations to workers.” Gov. Diri Stated.
Diri, while appreciating leaders of the Labour force in the state, reiterated that the Bayelsa State government will not cease to pay the salaries of workers on time as the government is committed to rewarding hardwork.
“I must thank the labour leaders and even the entire workforce in the state for their cooperation so far and urge them to please continue.
“On our part, we will not relent to reward your hardwork and make everyone enjoy the fruits of their labour.” He added.
Gov. Diri also lamented that he was pained being denied attendance by Covid-19, the marking of today being the first Workers Day since his emergence as the governor of the state.
“Being the first Workers Day since I became Governor, I was looking forward to be part of the usual event organized to mark the day, but unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has denied me that opportunity. I am still hopeful even as I look forward to subsequent ones.
“Let me use this opportunity to pay special tribute to all our essential workers especially those who are in the health sector. This is a crucial period for them as we battle to contain the spread of the Coronavirus. I salute their courage and dedication.
“On behalf of my Deputy and all team members of our consolidation for MORE prosperity government, I felicitate with all workers in the state and wish them the very best. I also charge them to rise to the theme of this year’s event which is ‘STOP THE PANDEMIC AT WORK’.
“We can do it and yes we can.” He added.
