…Raises A Point Of Order.

Ovoke Paul

ABUJA – The senator representing the productive people of Bayelsa West senatorial district, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo raised a point of order to question the rationale behind a motion seeking the 9th Senate to direct the clerk of the house to advise the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). The motion was moved in the name of the Deputy President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ovie Omo-Agage, during their inaugural plenary session today Thursday 13th June 2019.

Speaking under order 15 privileges, Senator Ewhrudjakpo submitted that the motion seeking the Senate to direct the clerk to advise the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as required by existing laws, is not proper, giving that, President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to constitute Federal Executive Council (FEC). And that to the best of his knowledge a new SGF is yet to be appointed by the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The lawmaker argued that there is no SGF presently, as such the motion only seemingly seeks the house to advise a Secretary who is non-existent. He advised that the motion should be suspended until a new Secretary to the Government of the Federation is appointed.

However in his response, the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan while acknowledging senator Ewhrudjakpo’s point of order presided that the house deal with the office of the SGF until the president appoint a substantive SGF. However, the Bayelsa lawmaker, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo stressed that the motion should be amended, such that correspondence are addressed to the office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation rather than a non existent SGF.
